I. Kiến thức cơ bản

A.There is và There are

  1. Singular – Số ít

there is...?

(there's)

is there...?

there is not...

(there isn’t or there’s not)

There’s a big tree in the garden. (Có một cái cây lớn ở trong khu vườn.)

There’s nothing on TV tonight. (Không có gì trên TV tối nay.)

Have you got any money? – Yes, there’s some in my bag. 

(Bạn có tiền không? – Có, có vài đồng trong túi tôi.)

Excuse me, is there a hotel near here? – Yes, there is./ No, there isn’t. 

(Xin lỗi, có khách sạn nào gần đây không? – Có, có đó/ Không, không có.)

We can’t go skiing. There isn’t any snow. 

(Chúng tôi không thể đi trượt tuyết. Trời không có tuyết.)

2. Plural – Số nhiều

there are…?

are there…?

there are not...

(there aren’t)

There are some big trees in the garden.

Có một vài cây lớn ở trong khu vườn.

There are a lot of accidents on this road. (Có rất nhiều vụ tai nạn trên con đường này.)

Are there any restaurants near here? – Yes, there are./ No, there aren’t. 

(Có nhà hàng nào gần đây không? – Có, có 1 vài./ Không, không có.)

This restaurant is very quiet. There aren’t many people here. 

(Nhà hàng này rất yên tĩnh. Không có nhiều người ở đây.)

A: How many players are there in a football team? (Có bao nhiêu cầu thủ trong một đội bóng đá?)

B: There are 11 players in a football team. (Có 11 cầu thủ trong một đội bóng đá.)

B. There is & It is

So sánh:

What’s that noise? – It’s a train. (It = that noise)

(Tiếng ồn đó là gì? – Nó là do một đoàn tàu.) (Nó = tiếng ồn đó)

There’s a train at 10.30. It’s a fast train.

(Có một chuyến tàu lúc 10:30. Nó là 1 chuyến tàu nhanh. )

There’s a lot of salt in this soup. 

(Có rất nhiều muối trong món súp này.)

I don’t like this soup. It’s too salty. (It = this soup)

(Tôi không thích món súp này. Nó mặn quá.) (Nó = món súp này)
