John: So Sarah, what can you tell me about your (1) ?
Sarah: My hometown. Well, my hometown is called Eau Claire, Wisconsin. And it’s a really great (2) .
There are about 80,000 (3) . There are lots of things to do. There are (4) movie theatres. I love to watch movies.
John: Me too.
Sarah: (5) lots of shopping. You can find anything you want there. There are (6) malls and stores.
John: (7) many restaurants?
Sarah: Yes. The thing I like is you can eat any type of food. There are Chinese restaurants and Korean restaurants, Italian restaurants. There is a big variety of restaurants, and they’re all good.
John: That sounds great. What about parks? Are there many places to see nature in your town?
Sarah: Yes. We have a lot of rivers, and lakes and hills. My hometown has four seasons. So in (8) , it’s great because there are lots of lakes to swim in, lots of forests to play in. In (9) , there is a lot of snow. So you can go ice skating or ice fishing or even (10) .

Bài 1: Điền is/are vào chỗ trống trong các câu sau:
1. There are about 80,000 people. (vì ‘80,000 people’ là số nhiều)
2. There are three movie theatres. (vì ‘three movie theatres’ là số nhiều)
3. There is a big variety of restaurants. (vì ‘a (big) variety of’ = một sự đa dạng là số ít)
Bài 2: Điền is/are vào chỗ trống trong hai câu sau. Có sự khác biệt ở từ được điền giữa hai câu không? Vì sao?
1. There are a lot of malls and stores.
2. There is lots of shopping.
Có sự khác biệt ở từ được điền giữa hai câu:
- Ở câu (1), ‘mall’ và ‘store’ là các danh từ đếm được, nên ‘a lot of malls and stores’ có nghĩa là ‘rất nhiều trung tâm thương mại và cửa hàng’ => dùng “are” cho số nhiều.
- Ở câu (2), ‘shopping’ là danh từ không đếm được, nên mặc dù có ‘lots of shopping’ => ta vẫn dùng “is” cho số ít.
Bài 3: Viết lại hai câu ở bài 2 để được dạng phủ định.
1. There aren’t (are not) a lot of malls and stores.
2. There isn’t (is not) lots of shopping.
