1. Cụm “I have to” trong câu “Yeah, so sometimes I have homework so I have to do my Japanese language homeworks some nights.” (ô số 8) được dùng để miêu tả một việc chủ ngữ ‘I’ cần làm/ phải làm (I have to do something = it is necessary for me to do it, I am obliged to do it). Cụ thể, ở đây Meg đề cập tới việc cô phải làm/ cần làm bài tập tiếng Nhật (do Japanese language homeworks).
2. Đáp án: “We had to walk home yesterday”. Khi diễn đạt ý ở thì quá khứ, “have to” được chuyển thành “had to”.
3. Đáp án:
- Does Jane have to work on Sundays?
- Why did they have to leave the party so early yesterday?
4. “have to” và “must” giống nhau trong trường hợp ta muốn bày tỏ ý kiến cá nhân. Ví dụ: It’s a fantastic film. You must see it. = You have to see it.
“have to” và “must” khác nhau trong các trường hợp còn lại. Trong các trường hợp đó, dùng “have to”, không dùng “must”. Ví dụ:
- Jane won’t be at work this afternoon. She has to go to the doctor (this is a fact). => Chiều nay Jane sẽ không đi làm. Cô ấy phải đi gặp bác sĩ (đây là một sự thật)
- Jane isn’t well. She doesn’t want to go to the doctor, but I told her she must go (this is my personal opinion). => Jane không khỏe. Cô ấy không muốn đi gặp bác sĩ, nhưng tôi đã bảo cô ấy rằng cô ấy phải đi (đây là ý kiến cá nhân của tôi)
