Scientists tell us that some activities are good for health and others are bad. Despite knowing that, millions of people still continue doing unhealthy activities. What are the causes and what are the solutions for this?

With instant access to the Internet nowadays, a wealth of health research and articles that can assist in cultivating a healthy lifestyle are a click away. However, a lack of time and indulgence in short-term pleasures keep people from healthy living. While this is the case, there are some solutions to this situation.

On the one hand, there are two main reasons why people often fail in the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle. First, in a society that judges individuals by their material worth, individuals are compelled to prioritize their professional lives and pursue financial success, even at the expense of their well-being. Because their hectic schedulele leaves little time for self- care, sleep deprivation, inadequate exercise, and poor diet are inevitable. Second, it is human nature to seek instant gratification, which can manifest in various forms, whether sacrificing sleep for a few more hours of gaming or prioritizing binge-watching a TV show over physical fitness. The release of dopamine in the brain reinforces these behaviors, making it challenging for many to resist the temptation, despite being well aware of the associated risks. However, these fleeting moments of satisfaction often transform into regrets over time.

On the other hand, there are solutions to address this issue. One of which is that people should learn to sustain a work-life balance. By recognizing the potential consequences of neglecting their health and exercising self-control, people can avoid the pitfalls of short-term pleasures and the relentless pursuit of money to strive for a more fulfilling life. Additionally, actively engaging with a community can be beneficial. Joining fitness groups, participating in online communities, or connecting with like-minded individuals on social networks can provide the motivation and support needed to adopt and maintain a healthier lifestyle.

In conclusion, although people often succumb to immediate pleasures and get caught up with their work, they can still lead a health-conscious lifestyle by understanding the harmful impacts of bad habits and having a supportive environment.

Đề bài 2:

Many people aim to achieve a work-life balance. What problems does this create, and how can these problems be addressed?

In the pursuit of a work-life balance, individuals often encounter various challenges that can impact their well-being and overall satisfaction. While the aspiration for equilibrium between professional and personal life is commendable, it can give rise to several problems. This essay will explore the issues associated with achieving a work- life balance and suggest potential solutions to address these challenges.

One primary problem stemming from the quest for work-life balance is the risk of burnout. As individuals strive to excel in both their careers and personal lives, they may find themselves stretched thin, leading to stress, fatigue, and diminished mental health. The pressure to meet work commitments while maintaining a fulfilling personal life can result in increased levels of anxiety and exhaustion. Another challenge is the potential strain on interpersonal relationships. In the pursuit of career goals, individuals may inadvertently neglect their families and friends, eroding the quality of personal connections. The demand for constant availability due to technological advancements can blur the boundaries between work and personal life, contributing to relationship tensions and a sense of isolation.

To address these problems, organizations can play a pivotal role by fostering a supportive work culture. Implementing flexible work hours, remote work options, and promoting a healthy work environment can contribute to a better work-life balance for employees. Additionally, promoting stress management programs, encouraging regular breaks, and providing mental health resources can mitigate the risk of burnout.

On an individual level, setting clear boundaries between work and personal life is crucial. Establishing specific time slots for work and leisure, avoiding excessive overtime, and learning to delegate tasks can help individuals maintain a healthier balance. Moreover, cultivating hobbies and activities outside of work can contribute to overall well-being and provide a necessary break from professional responsibilities.

In conclusion, the pursuit of a work-life balance can lead to burnout and strained relationships. To address these issues, a multifaceted approach is necessary, involving both organizational and individual efforts. By fostering a supportive work environment and adopting personal strategies to maintain boundaries, individuals can achieve a more harmonious balance between their professional and personal lives, ultimately enhancing their overall quality of life.

Dạng advantages – Disadvantages essay

Đề bài 1:

Today many countries import food from different parts of the world. Is this a positive or negative development?

Growing demands for a more diverse range of foods, coupled with a lack of domestic supplies, have necessitated food importation on a large scale. The advance of transportation, on the other hand, has paved the way for this increasingly popular practice. Although this trend brings about both advantages & disadvantages, the former likely seems to outweigh the latter.

Food importation undoubtedly enables diversity for consumers and opportunities for businesses. Since agricultural products are highly subjected to variations in climate conditions, countries with a polar climate, for instance, tend to import tropical produce rather than domestically cultivating them. This allows shoppers to opt for a variety of produce year-round without having to limit their choices to local supplies. When the popularity of imported food increases, capable businesses can expand their market size, and ultimately have more opportunities to achieve greater economies of scale, thus a higher profit margin. For businesses in emerging countries like Vietnam, striving to meet the entry standards of developed markets provides them with an incentive to access technical know-how, and consequently raising their competitive advantages.

Imported foods do not only bring about benefits. To store food over a long transporting process, manufacturers likely need to apply different preservation methods. For example, fruits can be harvested before they are ripe for greater durability, because of which the flavors may not be at their best when delivered to consumers. Also, preserving food for a long period of time definitely requires advanced technology and strong manufacturing capability, which not every company has access to. Worse still, the failure to limit transportation and preservation costs to manageable levels could drive up the prices to the end-consumers, which could cause importing businesses to lose their competitive advantages to the local players. However, these drawbacks from food importation seem likely to fade in the long run, since the ongoing globalization has made advanced technologies more accessible and affordable than ever before.

In conclusion, while importing foods may pose flavor-wise problems and threats to small companies, it is generally a positive trend that offers consumers more variety and businesses higher profits.

Đề bài 2

Space travel has been possible for some time and some people claim that space tourism could be developed in the future.

Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Space travel has transitioned from being a far-fetched concept to a tangible reality, with space travel technology making more significant strides than ever before. The future development of civilian space exploration has sparked debates over its implications. While some raise concerns about its justification, I firmly believe that this form of tourism represents a positive development.

It is argued that the enormous costs associated with tourist trips to space, even if space technology made space tourism possible, are unjustified when we are still facing more pressing societal issues, such as unemployment, environmental pollution, or poverty. It is, therefore, deemed more important for financial resources to be directed towards addressing these matters. However, this line of reasoning fails to consider the fact that space tourism will be predominantly driven by the private sector, as opposed to national space programs funded by taxpayers. As profit-driven enterprises, businesses investing in commercial space travel are unlikely to allocate funds to socially beneficial projects, even when they are not pursuing space tourism ventures.

On the other hand, civilian space travel is a welcome development for various reasons. Economically, it creates employment opportunities across a spectrum of industries like aerospace engineering, hospitality, and space operations. Such growth in jobs can have a substantial positive impact on local economies, particularly in regions where spaceports and related facilities are located. Socially, commercial spaceflights make the experience of living in zero gravity or gazing at Earth from outer space, which once was the exclusive privileges of astronauts selected by governments, more accessible to the public. Though passenger space travel comes with a high cost in its initial stages, competition will eventually drive prices down, opening up the possibility of space travel to a more extensive demographic.

In conclusion, despite the high expenses involved, I believe space tourism to be a positive development. It not only stimulates economic growth but also brings the dream of exploring outer space to a broader population.

Đề bài 1

Some people think that too much money has been spent looking after and repairing old buildings, so we should knock down old buildings and build modern ones instead.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is believed that the government spending on maintaining and renovating old buildings is excessive, and historic structures should be demolished to make room for modern ones. I completely disagree with this idea.

The argument in favor of constructing new buildings would be that older ones, presumed to require high maintenance costs, are no longer functional for their intended use and, therefore, should be replaced. However, this is a very shortsighted view. Reusing and repurposing existing structures uses less energy and raw materials than building new ones, resulting in lower costs. Once restored to its original glory, a historical building will likely be better, more sustainable, and more cost-effective than its modern counterpart. Furthermore, buildings created in the 20th century, for example, were often made of more durable materials that can withstand harsh weather conditions, and the fact that many still stand is a testament to the skills and craftsmanship of our ancestors.

However, the most compelling reason the authorities should preserve old buildings is that they often embody the history, heritage, and cultural identity of a community. These buildings capture a moment in history and serve as a powerful reminder of our connection to the past.  Demolishing an old building or simply letting it fall into disrepair could mean a piece of our history is lost forever. Additionally, heritage buildings often possess unique agricultural features that can not be replicated in modern constructions. They contribute to a city’s visual appeal and intricacy, adding character to its urban landscape. Even seemingly unremarkable buildings could hide a wealth of architectural details that could tell us a lot about bygone eras.

In conclusion, every effort should be made to protect historic structures from urbanization and threats of destruction as they hold immense cultural and aesthetic values.

Đề bài 2

People living in the 21st century have a better quality of life than the previous centuries. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is said that people in the contemporary era are experiencing an enhanced quality of life compared to those in the past. I completely agree with this.

To begin with, improved healthcare has significantly benefited the majority of the population. The implementation of universal healthcare and insurance systems have removed many barriers to accessing medical services, especially financial ones. Additionally, breakthroughs in medical science such as genetic technologies or vaccines have made many diseases curable now, prolonging life expectancy. Furthermore, the growing awareness of mental health is addressing overall well-being of individuals in a way that was unprecedented in earlier centuries.

Secondly, the rise of technology, particularly the internet, has revolutionized various facets of our lives. The emergence of online shopping, for example, has given us access to a vast array of products at our fingertips, offering increased choices and greater convenience. Additionally, remote working has enabled individuals to perform their job duties from the comfort of their homes. This allows more time for people to pursue their personal interests, contributing to an improved work-life balance. Also, the widespread use of social media has made it possible for us to stay in touch with loved ones in real-time, regardless of their locations, fostering a sense of connection.

Another noteworthy factor is the increased accessibility of education. The proliferation of distance learning and expanded access to formal schooling has resulted in a more knowledgeable and skilled population. This opens up better opportunities for individuals’ professional and personal development, ultimately enhancing standards of living.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that individuals living in the 21st century enjoy a superior quality of life compared to previous centuries, thanks to advancements in medical, technological, and educational domains.

Đề bài 1

Some people believe that sport has an important role in society. Others, however, think that it is nothing more than a leisure activity for some people. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

There have been different views on the role of sporting activities of late. While some people believe that sport solely serves recreational purposes, I side with those who think it plays a significant role in society.

On the one hand, sports indubitably play a recreational role. For evidence, we need to look no further than the widespread popularity of sports all over the globe. However, that sports purely serve entertainment purposes would be a partial view, which often stems from the relatively low rank of sporting activities on some people’s priority list. They might instead prefer to spend the majority of their time on more worthwhile activities, such as studying, working or nurturing relationships, and only consider sports as a stress reliever. It is for this reason that they do not play sports on a regular basis, and the lack of sports training would make it hard for them to experience the wholesome effects brought about by sports, although they may have been passively made aware of these values.

On the other hand, I am personally in favour of the idea that the role sports serve would extend beyond entertainment, and cover many societal values. Firstly, sports players have a better chance of living their lives to the fullest. In fact, research has shown that playing sports on a regular basis could exert positive effects on physical conditions as well as mental health, both of which can promote a productive and disease-free life. Healthy and productive citizens are the foundation for any strong society, with high living quality. Secondly, sport is one of the major factors contributing to the economic development of a society. Sports lovers usually pay for sporting event tickets or channel subscription to watch their favorite games, and sports players often have to purchase necessary equipment. Moreover, some commercial activities thrive partly owing to the prevalence of sports-related advertisements. In fact, the enormous sports- related revenue, whether from direct or indirect sources, makes the sports industry a significant contributor to GDP in countries all over the world.

In conclusion, the view of sports as a pastime has its merits, but to say that they only serve one purpose does not do them justice. Societal values brought by sports would include a healthier and better-off society, among others.

Đề bài 2

Some people believe that crime is a result of social problems and poverty, others think that crime is a result of a bad person’s nature. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

In recent years, the causes of crime have been the subject of much debate. Some argue that social problems and poverty are the main causes of crime, while others maintain that criminal behavior is a result of inherent character flaws. In this essay, I will examine both perspectives and provide my own opinion.

On the one hand, supporters of the idea that crime is a result of social problems and poverty argue that individuals who live in deprived areas are more likely to commit crimes. The lack of education, job opportunities, and social support in these areas can lead to frustration and despair, which in turn can lead to criminal behavior. For example, research has shown that individuals who grow up in impoverished neighborhoods are more likely to engage in criminal activities compared to those who grow up in more affluent areas. Additionally, studies have also demonstrated a strong correlation between poverty and crime rates in many countries around the world.

On the other hand, advocates of the theory that crime is a result of innate personalities argue that certain individuals have a natural inclination towards criminal behavior. These individuals are often portrayed as being inherently violent, aggressive, and impulsive. They believe that even if individuals who live in struggling areas were given opportunities and resources, they would still engage in criminal behavior. Moreover, they suggest that people who commit crimes are not influenced by their environment or upbringing, and it is in their nature.

In conclusion, the issue of crime is complex and multifaceted. I believe that both factors can contribute to criminal behavior, and it is essential to address both issues to reduce crime rates in society.

Dạng 2-part question

Đề bài 1

In many countries, people now wear Western clothes( suits, jeans) rather than traditional clothing. Why? Is this a positive or negative development?

The last several decades has witnessed a growing preference of Western-style apparel, which has largely replaced traditional clothing the world over. To fully grasp this trend, it is necessary to examine its causes before a valid conclusion could be drawn on its influence on the general population.

Among the host of factors that give rise to Western clothing preference, it is likely that the practical values and a sense of individuality, which modern costumes have to offer, standout. Modern garments, in relation to past ones, are designed to bring a far more pragmatic value, and given that we are now living in a hectic world, the current trend in clothing would serve to facilitate our role at the workplace. It is for this reason that the bulk of companies these days, regardless of their line of business, require their employees to wear a uniform which is appropriate for the nature of their jobs. At other times, when these individuals are not working, and thus are free to put on their favourite clothes, a sense of individuality comes into play. This means that we, in comparison with our preceding generations, are arguably more predisposed to display our uniqueness with the clothes we wear, and as such modern apparel, which varies considerably in styles, acts as a precursor for our wish.

Debatable as it might be, the dominance of Western-style costumes over their traditional counterparts has resulted in a favourable impact on the general population. Admittedly, many would be tempted to argue that the rise of modern clothing heralds the end of traditional ones, and thus threaten our traditional values. To the best of my knowledge, however, there has been no scientific research that manages to establish a link between what we wear and our perception of traditional values. On the other hand, the variety in the Western fashion design endorses our diversity in personalities. Were we to invariably wear traditional costumes, which are notable for their limited variations, we would find it difficult to project our individual images to those around us.

In conclusion, the prevalence in Western-style apparel could be explained by its associated practical merits and its role in helping us demonstrate our uniqueness. The argument in favour of preservation of traditional values, in all probability, shouldbe invalid as it has not been scientifically proven.

Đề bài 2

More and more people today are spending large amounts of money on their complexions in order to look younger.

Why do people want to look younger?

Do you think this is a positive or negative progression?

It is true that a growing section of the population is investing substantial sums in skin care products and cosmetic procedures to appear young. This phenomenon can be attributed to social pressure, and its implications are negative from my perspective.

People’s obsession with a youthful image arises from unrealistic beauty standards set by the media. In contemporary society, media outlets constantly bombard their viewership with images of flawless complexions, often portraying them as the epitome of desirability and success. Instagram, a social media platform with billions of users, for example, is full of pictures of models and influencers with seemingly perfect, glowing complexions. Another example is in commercials and movies broadcast on TV, where celebrities appear significantly younger than their actual age. This glorification of youthful appearances creates a beauty standard that many feel obligated to pursue, believing it to be a key factor in attaining social validation.

This development can have detrimental impacts on individuals, particularly in terms of financial implications associated with investing heavily in anti-aging treatments since the costs, including procedure fees, medication, and medical tests, are often exorbitant. Although there are more affordable alternatives, such methods all require consistency and sustainability, which over time may add up to a significant sum. From a psychological perspective, the beauty industry may capitalize on the fear of aging and the social stigma associated with visible signs of aging. By exploiting this insecurity, it convinces people that maintaining a youthful appearance is essential for social acceptance. This creates a sense of perpetual dissatisfaction with one’s appearance.

In conclusion, the pursuit of youthfulness is a response to societal pressure, and this trend is placing a burden, economically and psychologically, on individuals; therefore, it should be considered a negative development.
